The Guelph Youth Music Centre’s Outreach Programs offer a wide variety of programming that is geared to educate and enrich the lives of youth.

 

Outreach Programs are accessible to all children and youth in Guelph and Wellington County. Subsidies are available to any participant who would otherwise be unable to attend our Outreach Programs.

ARTS CAMPS


The Guelph Youth Music Centre offers day camps with an assortment of themes and activities for kids of all ages and abilities.

 

Tairy Fales Summer Arts Camps ($154.35/week)
Please see the link below for the 2011 camp dates.
All full day of camp (8AM-5PM) from Monday to Friday between July and August 2011.
Putting a new twist on traditional fairy tales, the Tairy Fales all-day arts camp features music, drama, dance, storytelling, and arts and crafts for children aged 5 to 12.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS


Valuable learning experiences don’t end in the classroom. At the Guelph Youth Music Centre there are a number of programs on our roster that allow children to participate in music and the arts after school hours.

 

GYMC Kids Chorus ($100 per 15-week session)
Thursday afternoons 4:30 - 5:30 p.m.

Session 1: September 8 - December 15, 2011

Session 2: January 19 - May 3, 2012
This introductory choir is for children aged 6 to 10 who have a passion for singing. Participants will learn the basics of choral singing in an atmosphere of fun.

GYMC String Orchestras ($340)
Includes the cost of a weekend rehearsal retreat.
Saturday mornings
September 10, 2011 - Final Concert May 4, 2012
The GYMC Junior and Intermediate String Orchestras look forward an exciting 2011-2012 season. These 25-week programs are for string players at the RCM Grade 4 level and above.

Under the direction of Adrian Raso students will learn to play the guitar! For musicians aged of 10 and 16.

GYMC School of Rock ($150 per session)
Monday evenings

Guitar: 6:00-7:00 p.m.

Bass Guitar: 5:00-6:00 p.m.

Percussion: 6:00-7:00 p.m.

Vocals: 6:00-7:00 p.m.

Session 1: September 19 - November 21, 2011

Session 2: January 9 - March 19, 2012

Session 3: March 26 - May 28, 2012
Under the talented direction of local musical artists, students will learn to play the guitar, percussion, bass or vocals for a small rock band over a 9-week session. The ninth week will entail a combined performance of all four sections of the band. For children aged 12 and up.

FOR CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

 

Creative Arts for Children with Special Needs ($110 per session)

Wednesday afternoons 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Session 1: October 5 - November 23, 2011

Session 2: January 11 - February 29, 2012

Session 3: March 26 - May 9, 2012
A music-based program for children with special needs focusing on creative expression, communication and social skills. For children aged 5 and up. Led by Katie Hampton, a highly qualified music, art and recreation therapist.

Medieval Madness ($12/child)
February 15, 16, 21, 22, 2012
9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Complementing the Grade 4 Ontario Ministry Curriculum Guidelines, the Medieval Madness full-day program allows students to learn about the Medieval and Renaissance era through music, dance, brass rubbing and armour workshops. With many schools having to be placed on a waiting list we have added extra days to this program.

Stop the World - I Want to Make African Music! ($8/child)
Tuesday, March 27 or Wednesday, March 28, 2012
9:30 - 11:30 a.m. or 12:30 - 2:30 p.m.

Grades 5 and 6
With a focus on the Grade 6 music expectations, this hands-on workshop will give students the opportunity to perform African music, experience its texture and tone colour, create accompaniment to its folk lore, and learn about the construction and use of the djembe drum.

DoReMi

An interactive music education program

DoReMi enriches the arts curriculum through a comprehensive music program, allowing elementary school students to acquire fundamental music skills and stimulate their creativity. Professional musicians will come into the classroom to provide an interactive workshop for teachers and students, while a study guide is given to teachers to assist with their music curriculum. Below are the different workshops offered under the DoReMi program.

 

 

Kindergarten - JK and SK

Brian Morcombe, Music with Brian

60 minutes

Brian actively involves kindergartners and their teachers in the creative process of music-making and provides students with opportunities to express themselves through music and enhance their exposure to music in a positive, relaxed and happy atmosphere. NO LIMIT TO THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS PER SESSION.

Grade 1

Willem Moolenbeek, Saxophonist

50-60 minutes

A concert saxophonist and recording artist, Willem introduces Grade 1 students to his family of saxophones, and helps students understand the relationship between beat, rhythm and melody in music. With simple handmade instruments, students will accompany Willem in a musical presentation during the classroom workshop. MAXIMUM 30 STUDENTS PER SESSION.

Grade 2

Jan Sherman, Traditional Aboriginal Drummer and Singer

50-60 minutes

Jan has been gathering and singing songs since childhood. Jan's Aboriginal Drum Circle will increase Grade 2 students' awareness of how music is an integral aspect of Aboriginal spirituality and the role that music plays in traditions and celebrations of earth-based peoples. MAXIMUM 30 STUDENTS PER SESSION.

Grade 3

Nancy Wharton, Cellist

50-60 minutes

A cellist with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, Nancy brings her 250 year old cello to the classroom. Students learn about classical music composers, as well as how sound and vibration of her cello create music. With simple handmade instruments, students perform in their very own orchestra. MAXIMUM 30 STUDENTS PER SESSION.

Grade 4

Richard Knechtel, Folk Singer

50-60 minutes

Folk singer/performer Richard involves Grade 4 students in a fun-filled, fast-paced music workshop highlighted with his famous "everyone joins in jug band". MAXIMUM 30 STUDENTS PER SESSION.

Grade 5, 6, 7, 8

James Gordon, Singer/Songwriter

50-60 minutes

James is one of Canada's most prolific songwriters. He teachers Grade 5-8 students the stops required to compose a song from scratch. The songwriting exercise culminates in an original song composed and sung by the students, recorded live on a CD and given to the class to keep as a memento of the songwriting experience. MAXIMUM 30 STUDENTS PER SESSION.
