About Us

The Guelph Youth Music Centre (GYMC) is a charitable organization dedicated to enriching lives through accessible, high-quality music education and community performance. We believe music fosters confidence, belonging, and well-being, and we work to ensure children and youth can participate regardless of financial circumstance.

Our roots trace back to 1981, when the Suzuki String School of Guelph began seeking a permanent home for youth music-making in the city. That vision expanded to serve a broader range of performing arts activities, and in 1992 GYMC was formally established. After years of community fundraising and advocacy, the City of Guelph purchased the historic post-and-beam seed warehouse beside the Goldie Mill ruins in Goldie Mill Park. Following extensive renovations supported by major grants, donors, and more than 20,000 volunteer hours, the Centre opened in 2001.

Situated along the Speed River, steps from downtown, our building reflects both Guelph’s industrial heritage and its creative future. Today, GYMC serves thousands of children, youth, and families each year through lessons, ensembles, early childhood programs, youth concerts, and an expanding range of diverse and inclusive programming. We actively reduce financial and systemic barriers, prioritizing access for equity-deserving, newcomer, rural, and under-resourced communities.

Our recital hall is both a learning environment and a community gathering place. In addition to our own programs, we provide affordable space to other Guelph arts organizations, independent artists, and community groups, strengthening collaboration across the cultural sector. As we grow, we continue to build on our founding spirit of volunteerism and partnership, ensuring GYMC remains a welcoming community arts hub for generations to come.
